The maedate dragon helmet decoration was often made for wealthy samurai or given to them by their daimyo and sometimes by the shogun himself. The dragon, or Ryu, is important in Japanese mythology. Associated with both heaven and water, they represent generosity, benevolence, experience and wisdom. Using its power and strength for the good and for the protection of people.
