Buddha Amitabha

Author’s copy of the head of the Buddha made of larch wood. The original was made in Japan during the Heian period, 12th century. Stored at the Harvard Art Museum, USA.
Carved from two wooden halves, hollow inside.
Similar works were created for Japanese Buddhist halls, as part of magnificent architectural and sculptural ensembles intended for the physical presence of Amitabha Buddha in the earthly world.
